Sarah Midgley, a postgraduate student who is currenctly undertaking a PhD in theoretical physics within the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Quantum-Atom Optics (ACQAO) at the University of Queensland, has been chosen as the 2009 winner of the Georgina Sweet Fellowship. The Georgina Sweet Fellowship, which is administered by the Australian Federation of University Women (AFUW), commerates the life of Dr Sweet (1875-1946), a zoologist and academic, who amongst many other achievements, was the first woman in Australia to receive a Doctorate in Science from the University of Melbourne.

The Fellowship, which was founded in 1964, provides $6000 to assist the recipient with their Phd studies. This year there were 42 applicants from a wide range of disciplines from all states and territories throughout Australia. Sarah Midgley said she was very honoured to receive this fellowship, as she has great admiration for the achievements of Dr Georgina Sweet. According to Dr Jennifer Strauss, President of the AFUW, “Dr Sweet was always promoting and supporting women who studied in scientific fields so she would be particularly thrilled to know that Sarah Midgley a PhD candidate in Physics has won the 2009 Award which bears her name.” Sarah will officially receive her award at a ceremony at the AFUW annual general meeting in September.
